AMAZING ESTATE FIND
STUDIO POTTERY PIECE
What a Wonderful addition to your collection!!!!
This is such a fascinating piece
on so many levels,
where do I begin!
The design and detail to this piece
is amazing combined with an incredible glaze!
This isn't just Art Pottery,
This is a STATEMENT PIECE!
The shape is a Circle Form,
on a Pedestal.
There are three holes,
One on top of circle,
one on bottom of circle,
and one in side of pedestal.
This does not include the hole
in center of circle.
Measures approx 12 inches tall.
weighs about 3 Lbs ,
has a Dark Reddish clay base.
The Semi Matte Glaze has a
Brown Base color,
a pale Greenish tint drip,
and Blue Drip.
Feels like there are sand partials throughout the glaze.
Some pictures show some of the odd dried floral pieces I found at this estate, that were used in flower arrangment
in the 50's and 60's.
Signed ARNOW (Edna Arnow).
For more than 40 years, Edna Arnow made stoneware pottery in the basement of her house in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side. Largely self-taught, she became a well-known and respected craftswoman in the Midwest. She developed distinctive textured glazes and clay bodies.
In the 1950s, she was part of an artists' coop gallery, Exhibit A, with potter Earl Hooks and others. She had exhibitions at The Art Institute of Chicago and The Chicago Public Library. She appeared on local televison, giving demonstrations and taught at the Evanston Art Center.
Mid-Century Modern design.
It's a style that Edna helped create!
Piece is in excellent condition,
I can find no damage.
It was recently found at an estate, along with 9 other pieces that I will be listing.
Some are signed, Leonora, Joanna Price, (A recognized studio potter from this era), names I can't make out,
and others are not signed.
The only thing the person having the sale, she Inherited the estate, could tell me about them, were that they were from the 50's and 60's, and that some of them were pictured in a book she found there, but she had taken the book home, and I didn't get to see it.
The pictures were of award winning floral arrangments done with
these pieces of pottery.
These pieces I believe were bought at pottery shows, and probably the same show circuit
Edna Arnow showed at.
I found this online,
Edna Arnow did Pottery demostration for flower arrangers. Though she continued to make purely functional mugs, plates, bowls and pitchers, Edna started making more complicated, oddly shaped pieces that contemporary flower arrangers loved. She developed a following in their community, and her work appeared in many shows and books.
