!!!!!

AMAZING ESTATE FIND

VINTAGE

MID CENTURY

STUDIO POTTERY PIECE

What a Wonderful addition to your collection!!!!

This is such a fascinating piece
on so many levels,
where do I begin!
The design and detail to this piece
is amazing combined with an incredible glaze!

The shape is a Disc on split Pedestal,
with a circle hole opening
on each side
The pedestal is hollow.
Reminds me of an Abstract Fish,
swimming to the top!

Measures approx 16 3/4 inches tall,
and about 9 inches wide.
Very heavy,
weighs 6 Lbs, 14 Oz's,
Redish Clay base,
may be Stoneware?
due to it's heavy weight.

The Matte Glaze has a
Slate Blue tint,
mixed with different shades
of Browns and Expresso Brown,
Gray and pale Mustard Yellow.
Heavy textured details,
that appear to drip off each side,
has some Crystalzed Sparkles in it,
and looks like the Textured Volcanic Glazes
or the Fat Lava Glaze I've read about.
and seen online.
Also similar to Edna Arnow's Crud glaze.
The inside glaze is glossy,
with drips.

Signed inside Pedestal,
Leonora

HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE!!!

Not sure if you would call this Modern, Modernist, Surrealist, Abstract, Expressionism or just Bizarre!
Not sure if this would be called Studio or Studio Ceramic.

Studio pottery refers to pots and ceramic pieces that are produced by an individual potter.
Studio pottery is generally seen as consisting of one-of-a-kind pieces, as opposed to production pottery in which a potter creates a large number of a specific form.
Studio ceramics is very closely allied with studio pottery. To many people, the terms are used interchangeably. For others, "studio pottery" refers only to functional ware, while "studio ceramics" includes functional and non-functional work, as long as it is made from clay and fired.

While much art pottery of the 20th century was produced by companies such as Rookwood, Roseville, and Weller, some of the most innovative work came out of the private studios of independent artists, who produced one-of-a-kind pieces on production schedules of their own making.

Since the second half of the 20th century ceramics has become more highly valued in the art world.
I've read, Important are the textural quality of their glazes and the shapes.
Multi-decorating techniques, such as incising, can add to the value.
I think this piece has it all!

Piece is in excellent condition,
I can find no damage.

It was recently found at an estate, along with 9 other pieces that I will be listing.
Some are signed, (Edna) Arnow, Joanna Price, (both are recognized studio potters from this era), Leonora, and others are not signed.
The only thing the person having the sale, she Inherited the estate, could tell me about them, were that they were from the 50's and 60's, and that some of them were pictured in a book she found there, but she had taken the book home, and I didn't get to see it.

The women of the estate was into flower arranging in the 50's and 60's.
Her pieces, which won many first prizes, were some of the photo's in the book.

Found this information on the web,
Edna Arnow did Pottery demostration for flower arrangers. Though she continued to make purely functional mugs, plates, bowls and pitchers, Edna started making more complicated, oddly shaped pieces that contemporary flower arrangers loved. She developed a following in their community, and her work appeared in many shows and books.

I believe these pieces were bought at shows, and possibly on the same show circuit as Edna Arnow.
