Vtg Rare 1950's Margot De Taxco Sterling Silver Snake Enamel Necklace:
$1,295

Margot Van Voorhies Carr was an American artist who moved to Mexico in 1937. After marrying into the Los Castillo silver family, her husband, Antonio Castillo, encouraged her to begin designing silver jewelry in his shop under the professional name of Margot de Taxco. When Antonio and Margot divorced in 1948, she opened her own silver workshop and store.

Her talent and personality attracted many Hollywood celebrities and wealthy Americans, not only to wear her jewelry to special events but to visit her store directly in Taxco. Her style became famous for her use of enamel to add texture and color to her silver desgns and her tributes to the Art Deco art movement as well as Mayan motifs.

Authentic Margot de Taxco jewelry items typically feature the words "Made in Mexico" or "Margot de Taxco" as well as the number 16 inside of an eagle symbol; (although earlier designs did not feature the eagle hallmark). Because of this, items which were manufactured before Margot started placing the eagle hallmark on her jewelry items are considered to be rare.

The Eagle form mark was instituted by the Mexican government in 1948; the Eagle stamp #3 was for Taxco, while the Eagle stamp #16 was registered to Margot.

Margot de Taxco inventoried her silver pieces number 5100-5707 and the enamel pieces 5109-5922.

Up for your consideration is this highly sought after serpent/snake necklace....

This piece is hallmarked with " Margot de Taxco, 5554, made in Mexico, Sterling".

The Eagle mark appears to be there but is very hard to see as it isworn, please review photos.

The necklace is articulated withconfetti green melange enamel over sterling, in amyriad of colors, with various shades of greens, browns, blues, and yellows, measuring approximatelyend to end16" inches. This necklace weighs approximately 3.2 ounces which is 90.178 grams.

Besides a few light enamel wear spots here and there, this piece is truly one of a kind...good luck and happy offerding! :)
