A Fine Antique Meiji Period Faux Ivory Okimono Netsuke
A Very Finely Carved Large Antique Meiji Period Faux Ivory Okimono Depicting A Snake With Frogs On Two Lily Pads.
The detail to this piece is breathtaking.
The item measures a very healthy 5" long x 2" 3/8 at it's widest point x 1" 1/4 high, (125mm x 60mm x 30mm). It has suffered no damage throughout it's history but there is a fault line running along the grain, curiously though, this runs in perfect line with the top of one lily pad leaf, then it runs to separate the snakes body and the lily pad, completely unaffecting the lotus bud, passes perfectly underneath and not through two more frogs eventually coming to rest just underneath and passed the third frog. At first glance the line looks intentional and part of the carving. I'm unsure myself and so will leave it up to the prospective buyer.
The Okimono is unsigned but does have an inked number to the underside.
Feel free to ask if you require further information and please take a look at my other unusual items listed.
Thank you.
