This very old and interesting antique violin
is offered to the highest buyer with .The violin is unlabeled but was probably made around the turn of the 19th century, c. 1810 or so. To my eye, the violin does not look like anything typical or commonplace. The violin was well-made with wide linings and four contoured corner blocks. The inside appears to have been lightly varnished or sealed at some point. The scroll is quite nice, smallish and very well worked and artistic. The purfling is striking with a very wide white sandwiched between narrow blacks. The purfling points bisect the corners in the center. The back is an exceptional single piece of bold, evenly flamed maple and the top, very straight fine grained spruce. The ribs and scroll wood matches that of the back. This old violin is a well-loved and often repaired survivor. There have been several old restorations to the top, including an inlaid soundpost patch. The pegbox has been cheeked from the inside to repair numerous cracks and all the pegholes have been bushed. The varnish is original and well preserved, and looks to have been French polished, probably early in the 20th century when shiny was very much in vogue. The violin has a later, modern neck and original grafted scroll. The instrument was expertly set up with new Thomastik Dominant strings. The bridge is of proper height, and well fitted to the violin, and a new soundpost has also been properly fitted. The pegs are old rosewood and are well-adjusted, turn easily and hold well. The tailpiece is ebony, All other repairs and adjustments have been done and there are no open cracks. All the seams have been checked, re-glued as needed and there is nothing needed at this time. The violin is ready to play. The sound of the violin is sweet and delightful to the ear. This is not the loudest and most powerful violin I have had but it projects very well, and has that sizzle to the sound that makes it very special. The tone is alive and juicy, well-centered and focused but expansive with bell-like overtones and wonderful harmonics that make it sound like a room full of instruments playing. The response is very fast, intonation is precise and the dynamics are broad-drawing a clean pure tone even with the lightest bow, and showing no sign of collapse when pressed aggressively. This is an easy violin to play because of its excellent measurements, and charming to listen to. I really enjoy this violin and I am certain any player will find it equally gratifying.
