THE REVIEW ABOUT SELLING ITEM:

Montblanc pens are well-known. Very well-known. Yet for some, they identify more with jewelry than fine writing instruments. Many Montblanc pens are beautifully designed - if not gaudy. They are adorned with jewels, and often have ornate nibs made of precious metals. Yet Montblanc pens are also recognized for their decadent writing quality, uppermost craftsmanship and quality, and sky-high price tags.

The Montblanc 149 then, is not what you’d expect to see. It has a uniformly coloured body, otherwise defined by only a few choice tinges of gold, and has no precious gems embedded in it. But it is a large pen, possessing a fantastically-designed, and relatively massive nib, made of what appears to be golden and silver metals. It also carries a price tag which warrants some debate - $810 USD. That’s a lot of money, and though it may not be the most expensive pen on the market (trust us, the most expensive pen we know of was priced at 500,000 USD), it definitely falls into the category of a premium pen. This is not something to buy on whim. Buying apen like this isn’t a mere purchase - it’s an investment.

So, the question remains, is this pen worthy of it’s pricetag? The Montblanc 149, contrary to other, gaudier Montblancs, has a single-coloured body, with a few gold accents. It’s a large pen, but not necessarily in a bad way. It’s made of plastic - er, “precious resin”, as per dubbed by Montblanc itself. Don’t let this deter you though - the body is a rich and beautiful shade of black, and its golden accents increase its luxurious appearance. It is a piston filler pen - meaning that it is devoid of the need for cartridges, and can hold an absolutely massive amount of ink. This is fantastic, as we find that many fountain pens suffer because of their limited ink capacity. In fact, we’ve heard that this has one of the largest ink capacities of any fountain pen! It’s 18k gold nib is beautifully designed, ornately coloured and decorated, and is….well, just as massive as the rest of the pen. Seriously - it’s one of the largest fountain pen nibs we’ve ever used! We also felt that this pen was of a perfect weight; it matched its size perfectly, and implied substance, yet simplicity. This classically designed pen boasts a magnificent build quality, with perfect threading for the cap. It’s plasticky design is more than a bit jarring however, especially considering that an aluminum pen, such as the Lamy Al-Star can be purchased for less than a tenth of the price. The overall design of the pen strikes us as ‘fancy’…because, it kind of is a large, fancy pen. The nib has a consistent and disciplined flow. It works well with any ink. Yet we’re remiss to admit that while it is moderately smooth, we expected much, much better for the price tag. Perhaps the conservative ink output and nib flow are what attract potential customers, but we’d definitely recommend trying this pen before purchasing it. The nib isn’t bad; it’s actually very good. It’s just that we’d prefer something a bit more free-flowing and smooth. Still, if you like thin lines of ink - you can’t go wrong here.

At the end of the day - we loved this pen. It has a unique nib, and a beautiful design. It also makes us feel like true fountain pen connoisseurs. But there are some caveats. First, it’s made of plastic. Second, it costs more than the average laptop. It’s a pen, and is well-designed, meaning it should be loved by this blog (which is aptly named Pen&Design), but we can’t shake the feeling that this is ridiculously overpriced by most standards. By fountain pen standards.
