Very Rare Antique Proof Spirits Beads Charles Gerletti Glasgow 1835 Whisky Rum:
THIS ITEM IS SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE
This is very rare survivor from the first half of the nineteenth century. Contained in a beautifully turned and patinated mahogany box are 12 spirit beads. An ingenious piece of scientific glassmaking, these were designed to test whether spirits contained the correct level of alcohol or their 'Proof.' These were made by Charles Gerletti of Glasgow who is listed as making other instruments such as barometers and we can date these quite precisely to the period of 1834 - 1839 at which point he moves from the 145 Saltmarket address (shown on the label) to Cambridge Street. The label inside the lid reads in full 'Charles Gerletti - 145, Saltmarket, Glasgow - Mathematical Instrument Maker - For Proof Spirits - If it is Proof, the Bead will sink to the Bottom.' It then goes on to list the numbers which correspond to engraved numbers on the beads and which drink each is used to test e.g. 'Double Whisky.' The box and all of the beads are in excellent condition despite their fragile nature and this is worthy of any collection/museum in the scientific instrument / breweriana field. It is being sold WITHOUT RESERVE and with a 99p start price. Please do look at my other items as I will combine postage charges etc (see delivery below).offer now to avoid disappointment.
