Very Rare Victorian 1881 Claret Jug Spun Glass Sterling Silver Rhodes & Barber For Sale
This sale is for a Rare form of a Victorian Claret Jug.
The Jug is hallmarked for the makers of Jehoiada Alsop Rhodes & Barber in the year 1881,whoare well notedSheffieldsilversmiths in business from 1878 to 1884.
The jug, which measures approximately 7 3/4 inches tall by 4 3/4 inches across, is clean and clear in very good condition with only two issues to mention, the first is a very common flaw for antique handled hand blown pitchers - where the thin part of the tail of the glass handle attaches to the body of the pitcher, there is a crack (please see close-up photo) - this is from the time of making andhas absolutely no effect on the strength or function of the pitcher or handle- it is a result of the body of the glass being cooler than the molten handle and the quick contraction of the thin tail causes the crack - if you are not familiar with this, please check it out so as to confirm what I am saying. The second issue is that an approximately 1/4 inch of a line of the threaded spun red glass has been chipped away (again please see close-up photo) - again this does not affect the strength or function of the pitcher asthis glass threadis a surface application; however, it is there just the same.
The pitcher features not only the unusual spun glass and globular shape, it is also has been finely wheel engraved with a floral pattern.
The glass is unsigned, which was not uncommon for custom ordersof glass which was to only form a part of the finished product, as often the maker of the end product wished to have only their name associated with the piece, but it is most likely made by Stevens &Williams or Hodgetts, Richardson and Son -as they were the only twoglass makers able to produce this threaded glass decoration -the following was taken froma history of glass on the internet:
"William Henry Stevens patented a machine for mechanically applying glass threads on glass as means of decoration (in 1879), but it was two years after Hodgetts, Richardson and Son had patented the first such machine."
This is an important example of an unusual shape and design in Victorian Glass.
