Very Rare Ww1 British Mills Grenade Box Dated 1918 For Sale
Super rare example of a WW1 British G5 MkIII wooden box for twelve Mils Hand Grenades and the associated fuse tin. This is the last of several of these boxes I saved from becoming firewood around 20 years ago. It is missing its lid and the end battens and their rope handles. I have a complete box, not for sale so don't ask!,fromwhich I can supply detailed dimensions and photographs. I will supply these only to the winning buyer. It is however a very simple restoration to display condition (a new lid and end battens can be distressed to match the existing wood) as the box is of simple nailed construction with no jointing required. I cannot stress how rare these boxes are. I have seen very few of these in over 40 years of collecting WW1 British militaria. Those I have seen have been in relic or dug up condition. The details of the box on offer are as follows: The box is in reasonably strong condition but has lateral cracks to the top of the end pieces where the battens were removed. The pieces are still together, held by nails, but loose. Reinstating the battens would cure this. The wood has suffered in the past from woodworm, but this has been treated on several occasions and is no longer a problem. It retains most of its original grey paint finish and original stencilling as seen in photos 1 and 3. The makers details are stamped into the wood on one end of the box and are W & M Ltd with the date 1918 clearly visible, see photo 4. In addition the designation of the box type is stamped into the bottom of the box and reads G 5 over III, Indicating the type and Mk No of the box, photo 5. The slots for the dividers for the centre section, which held the fuse tin, can be seen and give the required dimensions for replacement. An incredibly difficult item to find. Perfect for a British WW1 or specialist grenade collection. Don't miss out you may never see another example! Overseas buyers Paypal only. All payment to be receievd within 5 days of the end of the sale please.
