Offered for sale is a fabulous, antique, Victorian era, solid 15 karat, yellow gold, mourning locket pendant that can also be worn as a brooch. The piece is in amazing condition for it\'s age, approximately 130+ years. The center of the brooch has a bezel set, 19 x 14.5 mm, oval, deep red, garnet cabochon weighing approximately 22 carats. The garnet has some minor surface nicks and scratches when viewed through a loupe but is in otherwise, very good condition. The center of the garnet has a rose gold, star design with 5, prong set, rose cut diamonds. The center diamond is approximately 3 x 2.5 mm. The other 4 diamonds are much smaller in size. The bezel, holding the garnet, is surrounded by a triple rope design, which is in turn, surrounded by gold beads. Some of the beads have dings or dents in them, upon close inspection, but it does not affect the look of the piece. The rim of the pendant has a double rope design, one small and the other, larger. The bottom of the piece has numerous, ornate, fringes that are longer in the center and get shorter towards each side. The fringe or tassels are a more, greenish gold color than the rest of the piece and everything has a wonderful patina.The back of the brooch has a fully intact, glass compartment for a picture or a keepsake of a loved one. The bezel surrounding the compartment has either old solder or remnants of a non gold tool, possibly used to pry out the compartment in order to put in or take out something. The green fabric inside the compartment is in very good condition. I am not sure whether the pin was a later addition or the bail. The bail does not fold down so most likely, one or the other, is a later, although old, addition. The brooch closes securely with an old style locking mechanism. The pin stem is white metal but has not been tested for gold content. The piece is unmarked for gold content but has been fully tested, except for the pin stem. The pendant weighs 17.6 grams and is 2 1/2 inches long including the bail by 27 mm wide, (25 mm - 1 inch). The bail should accommodate up to a 4.5 mm wide chain.
