This is a stunning Victorian Demantoid Garnet, Garnet & Diamond Fly brooch beautifully mounted in 15ct Gold, circa 1880.

The wings are set with bright green Demantoid Garnets, faceted stones of various size. The body is set with rich coloured Cabochon cut Garnets and the eyes are set with small rose cut Diamonds.

In the victorian era symbolism was taken to such an extreme that very intimate messages were spelled out in jewelry that could be read, like books if one knew the vocabulary, with the design and choice of elements telling of the giver\'s feelings or hopes. The fly symbolises humility or knowledge of secrets.

This is a really fine quality brooch of typical Victorian design.

The original pin and secure catch are Gold and in good condition.

The gross weight is 5.1 g.
