The Presentation Case or Box measures approximately 7 7/8 inches or 201 mm across its width from side to side by 8 1/8 inches or 207 mm across its length from the hinge to the front catch and it stands 2 inches or 51 mm tall to the top of its lid when closed.
All four salt or sauce dishes and spoons are made from sterlingsilver with a combined silver weight of 5.215 Troy ounces or 162.3 grams.
Each salt or sauce dish is made in the novelty form of a stylizedscallop shell that has been embossed or raised relief decorated to give the dish its shell like definition and it stands on three wonderful raised relief and engrave decorated stylized dolphin shaped legs, each spoon has a circular shaped bowl with a twist decorated handle that has a raised relief scroll and shell decorated finial or end and the set is complete with its original circular brown leather bound hinged top presentation case or box that has been internally fitted and lined with a plush purple velvet and silk lining and the case or box has a sprung push button catch on the front, the set has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and each of the four salt or sauce dishes and spoons has been impressed with a matching full set of English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,
RH - Lion Passant - Leopard Head - stylized P - Queen Victoria Head
RH is the London silversmith or makers mark of Robert Hennell, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver, the Leopard Head is the mark of the London assay office, the stylized letter P is the date letter for 1870 and the Queen Victoria Head is the duty mark of the reigning monarch.
Thecondition of this set is used and near Mint for its age.
The Salt or Sauce Dish and Spoons have No Dents, No Holes, No Splits, No Cracks and No Repairs that I can find, the dishes all stand upright, the spoons are all straight, the definition and decoration is very crisp, the sterling silver hallmarks are all still legible, the dishes all hold liquid without leaking, the presentation case or box opens with ease and clicks tightly shut although as this set is a used antique it does have some minor scuffs, surface marks and wear to the presentation case or box and the silver dishes and spoons have some extremely minor surface marks and wearfrom use, this set has the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would not go amiss. Personally I think that this antique shell shape dish and spoon set canstillbe used today on a dining table for salt, mustard, mint, cranberry or tartar sauces and that it would make a superb addition to any collection, I also think that it looks absolutely fantastic considering that it's over 140 years old.
This Fabulous Victorian Boxed Set of 4 SterlingSilver Novelty Scallop Shell on Dolphin Shape Salt or Sauce Dishes &Spoons by Robert Hennell of London dated 1870 is one of several pieces of antique and collectable silver that I have also listed.
