This Antique Hanau Miniature Figure measures approximately 2 3/4 inches or 70 mm across its length from the back of the sleigh to the front of the reindeer's legs by just over 1 inch or 27 mm across its width from one of the cherubs hands to the other and it stands 1 7/8 inches or 48 mm tall to the top of the cherubs riding stick or staff.
The miniature figure is made from sterling silver and it is a delightful scene of a cherub or angel that is sat in a shell shaped sleigh holding the reigns of a leaping reindeer and a riding crop or staff in the other, the figure has been raised relief and engrave decorated to give it definition and it has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram and the underside of its sleigh has been impressed with the German Hanau silversmith or makers marks of B. Neresheimer & Söhne who were founded in 1893 all as photographed below, the sleigh has also been impressed with a full set of English sterling silver imported item hallmarks that read as follows,
BM - Lion Passant - Three Wheat Sheaves - P - F
BM is the London sponsor or importers mark of Berthold Muller, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver, the Three Wheat Sheaves is the mark of the Chester assay office, the letter P is the date letter for 1898 and the letter F is an English mark that denotes that the item is of Foreign origin.
Part of the rarity of this miniature figure is in the fact that it has been impressed with a Chester hallmark, the Chester assay office was closed in August 1962 and pieces that bear this mark have become harder to find as they are more desirable to the serious collector.
Thecondition is used and Excellent for its age.
The miniature figure has NoDents, No Splits, No Cracks. No Holes and No Repairs thatI can find, the figure stands straight, the definition and decorationis very crisp, the Hanau maker and English silver hallmarks are still clearly legible although as this is a used antique miniature figure the cherubs staff is loose and it has a small piece missing on one end of the sleigh bars on the left side of the reindeer, it does have some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along with the patinaof age thatis to be expected and a gentle clean would not go amiss. Personally I think that this miniature cherub and reindeer figurewouldmake a superb addition to any cabinet collection and that it looks absolutely fantastic considering that it's almost 120 years old.
This Delightful Victorian Chester Hallmarked Sterling Silver Cherub or Angel & Reindeer Pulled Sleigh Figure dated 1898 is one of several piecesof antique and collectable silver that I have also listed.
