Victorian 18ct Gold & .10ct Diamond Set Mourning Brooch 1895 . 8.3g . Not Scrap For Sale
Superb Victorian 18ct Gold & Old Cut .10ct Diamond Set Photo Locket or Mourning Brooch circa 1895
This Superb QualityAntiqueBrooch measures approximately 1 5/8 inches or 42 mm across its length from side to side by just over 1 1/4 inches or 33 mm across its width from its top to its bottom edge and it is just under 5/8 of an inch or 15 mm deep from the pin on the back to the front of the brooch.
The broochismadefrom .750 standard 18ct or 18 carat gold in a delightful shape with a inset bead and rope effect decoration around a raised oval shape central panel that has a variety of different sized decorative balls around its outer body, the central panel has a been set with an old round cut diamond that is within a star like setting and the diamond is .10 ct or carats measuring approximately 1/8 of an inch or 3 mm across its width or diameter from side to side, within the back of the brooches body there is a removable glass panel that has a rose gold outer bezel or chapter ring and this would have been used to hold a lock of hair or a photograph of a loved one, the brooch has a gold hinged pin and C clip on the back and it has Not beenengraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram, the back of the brooch has been impressed in two places with a European .750 standard 18K 18ct or 18 carat gold mark all as photographed below and the brooch weighs 6.5 grams with the gold mounted glass panel removed or it has a total weight of 8.3 grams when the rear panel is in place, I estimate that this brooch wasmade circa 1890 - 1900.
The condition is used and near Mint for its age.
The brooch has No Dents, No Cracks, No Splits, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, the brooch is straight, the decoration is very crisp, the diamond is still firmly set, the back panel opens and closes tightly with ease so that a photograph can be added, the hinged pin is working, the gold marks are still legiblealthough as the brooch is a used antique it does ave some extremely minor surface marks and wear fromuse along with the patina of age thatis to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique diamond set locket or mourning brooch can stillbe worn today and that it would make a superb addition to any collection, I alsothink that it looks absolutely fantasticconsidering that it's around120 or so years old.
