~Victorian 9 Ct Rose Gold & Crystal Mourning Brooch~ The rectangular case is made of 9 carat rose gold and it has a crystal glass cover. Inside the case is fancy braided, dark blonde hair. The brooch has the simple 'C' type catch. There are no hallmarks but it has been acid tested for gold. ~ Mourning Brooch ~ From the eighteenth century through the Victorian era it was fashionable to incorporate hair and portraiture into a brooch. The practice began as an expression of mourning, then expanded to keepsakes of loved ones who were living. Human hair was encased within the brooch or braided and woven into a band to which clasps were affixed. It was not uncommon for miniature brooch portraits to incorporate ground human hair as pigment. ~ Dimensions ~ The brooch is 0.6 inches (1.6cm) long by 0.5 inches (1.4cm) wide. The brooch weighs 2.6 grams. ~ Condition ~ The brooch is in beautiful antique condition with minimal wear.Please see photographs below for further condition and details....
