An early vesta case / match safe with flat polished edges and the striker on the flap lid.
Assayed in Chester and hallmarked with the year letter B for 1885-86, the lion passant for English silver, and the Monarch’s head Duty Mark of Queen Victoria. Plus the makers mark J.F, probably James Fenton.
128 years old.
Condition: Excellent; slightly uneven on the hinge edge (please see photos) with a good striker, hinge and spring.
Height 1.51 inches (39 mm) x width 1.04 inches (26 mm) x depth 0.42 inches (11 mm). Weight 17.7 grams.
