Victorian Leaf, Vine & Berry Decorated Silver Plate Chamber Candlestick by Elkington & Co dated 1851
This Antique Chamber Candlestick measuresapproximately 4 1/2 inches or 114 mm across its length from the back of its handle to the front of its base by just under 3 5/8 inches or 92 mm across the width of its base from side to side, it stands 2 1/8 inches or 54 mm tall to the top of the candle holder or sconce and it stands 2 7/8 inches or 73 mm tall to the top of the snuffer when it is in place.
The chamber candlestick is made from a base metal that has been completely silver plated and it weighs 183.7 grams, it is in the form of a leaf shape base that has berries on its front and it has a vine shaped handle that has a leaf on its top as a thumb rest along with a bracket on the front that holds the candle snuffer, in the center of the base there is a vine like stem under a berry decorated candle holder and the holder is complete with its original berry and leaf decorated removable candle sconce, the chamber candlestick has been wonderfully raised relief and engrave decorated to give it definition and on the underside it has been impressed with an Elkington pattern number 2083, the chamber candlestick has Not been engraved with a previous owners initialsor family monogram and the top of the leaf on its handle has been impressed with the word famous Birmingham silversmith or makers marks of Elkington & Co along with the Elkington date letter M for 1851 all as photographed below.
Thecondition is used and Excellent for its age.
The Chamber Candlestick has No Dents, No Splits, No Cracks,No Holes and No Repairs that Ican find, the chamber candlestick stands straight, the definition and decoration is very crisp, the silver plate is in near Mint condition as it not rubbed or worn through, the candle sconce and snuffer can be easily removed and they fit perfectly in place, the Elkington date and makers marks are still clearly legible although as this chamber candlestick is a used antique the candle snuffer has a dented lower rim and the chamber stick has some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use, it has the patinaof age that is to be expected and a good clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique chamber candlestick can still be used today and that they would make a superb addition to any cabinet collection, I also think that it would look wonderful in the correct setting with a lit candle in it and that it looks absolutely fantastic considering that it's over 160 years old.
This Superb Quality Victorian Leaf, Vine &Berry Decorated Silver Plate Chamber Candlestick & Snuffer by Elkington &Co dated 1851 is one of several pieces of antique and collectable silver that I have also listed.
