This is a beautiful little late Victorian cameo carved from apeach to salmon colored piece of natural, un-dyed Mediterranean coral. Theclassical woman\'s bust in half profile is carved in high relief and is a deeppeach color. She is elaborately carved with flowers in her hair and on herbreast. She has a draped garment. The frame is a beautiful winding plant motifthat is also engraved for added detail and is marked 14 kt gold. There is abale that is hinged to fold up or down and turn, and a pin with a safetycatch. This small oval cameo can be wornas a pin or pendant. I bought her from a dealer in New York 35 years ago.

She is in perfect condition for a lady 140 years old! There is one pin-hole on the edge of herdress that is from the original coral (a worm-hole)

Coralhas been extensively used for jewelry from Greek and Roman times to the 20thcentury, and from Asia to Europe and North America. It can come in colors ranging from white toblack and from pale peach through salmon, tomato and the intense red of nobelcoral. Coral is an organic derived “stone” being the exo-skeleton and supportof the coral polyp colony. Only somespecies of coral are considered semi-precious, gemstone quality and most ofthis has, through history, come from the Mediterranean. This is becoming very scarce now due topollution and over-harvesting. Most ofthe contemporary coral is of inferior grade and dyed to give color.
