This sale is for a awesome pair of Victorian "jet" and seed pearl earrings.
These striking earrings have a wonderful wee four leaf clover center piece, made in satiny finished French "jet" glass, with a seed pearl bezel set at it's heart. This pearl is a genuine, natural seed pearl measuring a tiny 1.5mm in diameter and have the translucent, creamy color of 120 years. Seed pearls set in black came to represent tears. In the Victorian language of flowers, a four leaf clover represents "be mine" but also faith, hope, love and luck: one for each petal of the clover; the black jet represents that the love is now over. The title French "jet", a period name for black glass, used to simulate onyx and genuine Whitby jet. Many would call these "mourning" earrings...and it is certainly true that the Victorians were highly sentimental and brought remembrance of those passed to unprecedented levels. Queen Victoria lost her Albert in in 1861 and she wore black until the day she died.
The earring faces measure a feminine 11.2mm at their widest by just 9.1mm tall with the earrings hanging a very petite 3/4 of an inch overall in the ear. They weigh just 1.6 total grams, whisper light and comfortable for all day. For reference, a single US dime measures 17.9mm in diameter and weighs a much heavier 2.3 grams. The earrings overall are in excellent, ready to wear condition with the jet clovers showing no hint of their true their age...there are no chips or tiny flea bite nicks just some rough areas from when the jet was molded.
We are professional jewelers with a eye tuned to see beauty...and we see it every where. Long time ers know us from the many, many pair of earrings we list and sell here; those that are upcycled and made from old cufflinks and Victorian buttons. Sometimes we stumble across parts or pieces of old jewelry which we save: you never know where they may be useful! That was the case here. The French jet glass clovers were also made around 1890, but come from an old, rolled gold plate circle pin, one of the clovers having gone missing over the last century and another heavily chipped. We bought the pin anyway because it had one set of clovers just perfect for a pair of earrings. We have pictured a page from a 1890's "New England Jeweler" catalog which shows a similar jet pin made with three leaf clovers and pearls. We have also included a scan of earrings from the same catalog to show how similar or earrings are to those of the period.
After removing the clovers and their seats from the pin, we added the vintage style solid 14k ear wires and "catchers" using out laser welder. We always use solid 14k so you'll have "good" gold for your sensitive ears...we wouldn't want less, why would you? You'll love the shepherd hook and catch! So easy to use and they give the earrings a tiny bit of sassy swing. A few gals have been worried about wearing wires but have been relived to find that the Victorians really knew their stuff: the "catchers" make the earrings very secure. The laser welder is what makes our earrings possible. It's a $30,000. machine which fuses the metals together; no torch flame, no ruinous heat and no sloppy solders. Every pair of our earrings are signed with an "A" in a diamond shape. We're very proud to stand behind our work and the "ace_of_Diamond" trademark is the proof.
What is it about the antique pieces that are so captivating? For us, we love the quality and the care made into each piece...125 years after a wonderful little pin was made, pieces of it have a new life lease as pair of earrings, ready for the next hundred years. If you've been looking for a special pair of earrings, something antique because you are a period re-enactor or perhaps just because you love this most romantic era, them look no further. If these are your earrings, don't hesitate to offer strong, it is the only pair we have.
