'Lieut Colonel John Thomas Maguire late 60th Rifles a Military Knight of Windsor died on 11 January 1904, after a prolonged illness, at his residence in Windsor Castle. Colonel Maguire who was in his eighty fifth year had a brilliant career. He served with the 55th Regiment of Foot in China in 1842, present at the attack and capture of Amoy, second capture of Chusan, attack and capture of Chinhae and operations up the Yangtsekiang.
Served with the 60th Rifles throughout the Punjab Campaign 1848 to 1849, being present at the siege and storming of Mooltan, the battle of Goojerat, the persuit of the Sikh Army until its surrender at Rawul Pindi, the occupation of Attock and Peshawur, and the expulsion of the Afghan Force beyond the Khyber Pass. He also served throughout the Rohilkund campaign and the Indian Mutiny including the actions at Bugawalla and Nugena, relief of Moradabad, action on the Dojura, assault and capture of Bareilly, attack and bombardment of Shahjehanpore, defeat of the rebels and relief of the Garrison , capture of the Fort of Bannai, persuit of the enemy to the left bank of the Goomtee, and the destruction of the Forst at Mahomdee, the destruction of Shahabad, commanded the 1st Battalion in the action at Bunkagong. He was thrice Mentioned in Despatches and was recommended for an unattached Majority by Lord Clyde for his service in the Field, but in lieu thereof subsequently obtained the Brevet of Lieutenant Colonel'.
