Victorian Sterling Silver 1/2 Pint Christening Cup, Mug Or Tankard Dated 1854:
Early Victorian Sterling Silver Baluster Shape Christening Cup Mug or Tankard by J Keith dated 1854
This Antique Christening Cup, Mug or Tankard measuresapproximately 4 1/4 inches or 107 mm across from the handle to the front of its body by 2 3/4 inches or 71 mm acrossthe width or diameter of its central body from side to side and it stands just over 3 3/4 inches or 96 mm tall to the top of its handle.
The cup or mug is made from 163.4 grams of sterling silver that has been internally gilded or gold plated in a delightful circular baluster shape that stands on a raised relief step decorated circular foot and it has a delightful raised relief foliate decorated scrolling handle on the side of its body, the cup, mug or tankard has an externally stepped upper rim over wonderfully embossed or raised relief and engraved floral, scroll and foliate decorated sides and it has an approximate liquid capacity of just under 1/2 a pint, 9 fluid ounces or 280 ml, the cup or mug has a shaped cartouche on the front that has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and the side of its upper body has been impressed witha full set of English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,
I.K - Lion Passant- Leopard Head - T in script - Young Queen Victoria Head
I.K is the London silversmith or makers mark of John Keith whose mark is recorded as only being used from 1848 - 1858,the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver, the Leopard Head is the mark of the London assay office, the letter T in script is the date letter for 1858 and the Young Queen Victoria Head is the duty mark of the reigning monarch.
Thecondition is used and near Mint for its age.
The ChristeningCup, Mug or Tankard hasNo Large Dents, No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairsthat I can find, the cup stands straight, the definition and decoration are very crisp, the cup holds liquid without leaking, the silver hallmark is slightly rubbed or worn but still legible although as the cup, mug or tankard is a used antique it does have the odd tiny shallow dent that is so small it's hardly worth mentioning along with some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use, it has the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance it greatly. Personally I think that this antique christening cup, mug or tankard can still be used today and that it would makea superb gift oraddition to any cabinet collection, Ialso think that it looks absolutely fantastic considering that it's it's almost 160 years old.
Please Note that any dark shadows in the images on this cup are just reflections that could not be avoided during photography.
