Victorian Sterling Silver Blackberry Pattern Thimble
& Jeweller's Case, Birmingham 1899
SEE ADDITIONAL PICTURES BELOW
Victorian sterling silver Blackberry pattern thimble consisting of chased blackberry leaves and fruit on a textured background. I have not been able to identify the maker's mark (possibly H.G) so would be delighted to hear from anyone who knows the maker. It may of course be an overstrike or superimposed mark. This is occasionally found when thimble makers supplied wholesalers, retailers and other jewellers with thimbles from their own stock.
Hallmarked on the flat rim: 5 (the size), H.G(?) the lion passant for sterling silver, the date letter Old English lower case "z" for 1899 and the Birmingham Assay Office anchor mark. The thimble is very slightly off round but free of holes, dents and repairs. Nice crisp detail to the pattern. There are some scratches (possibly bench tool marks) on the inside. Height approx. 2.4 cm; internal base diameter approx 1.6 cm; weight 5.7 grams.
Comes complete with jeweller's shaped brown leather thimble case with metal hinge and hook and eye catch. Lined with white silk and dark blue velvet.
