This outstanding and substantial presentation table snuff box is an excellent example of the work of Frederick Marson. He was an important Victorian box and case maker who worked in Birmingham from 1845 to 1896.
This box appears never to have been used.
The attractive foliage decoration is clear and bright.
The interior gilding (gold wash) is intact and uniform in colour.
The 17 knuckle hinge is solid.
It is hallmarked both on the lid and the base of the box.
The hallmarks are good.
There is an intriguing inscription which reads \"To the D.M., in remembrance of Blackdown\".
(D.M. could mean Drum Major, and Blackdown is a relatively common place name in England.)The box weighs 141.2 gm (4.54 troy oz).The measurements are: 9.5 x 4 x 2.5 cm (3.8 x 1.6 x 1.0 in).The hallmarks:
