Hello, the Victorian Plant Stand was originally listed at $850.00 with the Cane (Raffia) in worn condition (as it was when acquired by me). I have finally gotten around to professionally restoring this elegant beauty and I am revising the listing price very moderately to absorb just some of the costs.
I enjoy having proper restorations done on my antuiqes (many original antiques are out there but they are often hard to find in good condition and it is a shame that many pieces of all kinds are improperly restored or repaired).
As with many other sales of mine, it is often listed as a restoration project which I haven\'t gotten to yet. I then professionally restore the item and continue the listing or keep the item for myself (if I have room, but I can\'t stop collecting when I see a charming piece, regardless of condition!).
After extensive research, the exact same Rafia material that was originally used on this stand was sourced from California. Both material and stand were then personally driven to H.H. Perkins (founded in 1917) in Connecticut for their expert installation and delicate color stain matching. The original Tortoise Shell bamboo frame was not altered or touched in any way, it remains completely original. Only the Rafia coverings on the shelf surfaces were replaced with new Raffia and carefully stained to match the patina of the original. The stand looks incredible!
The first six photos show as it is now (new Raffia), the second six photos are from the original listing and show the condition as it was acquired by me. You will not be disappointed with this piece! Another of my unfinished projects... one exactly like this sold on 1st dibs for 1,200.00 and there are others similar to this stand (but larger) that are listed in the 2,000.00 - 2,500.00 range.
I prefer the smaller footprint, more delicate design (less bracing) and the curved legs of this model to the sturdy, straight legged models with additional bracing that one commonly finds in the market. It seems though, fewer of these survived due to their delicate stature. They are however, more versatile for smaller spaces and they do just as good a job speaking for themselves in larger spaces due to their gracefully curved legs...
But don\'t be fooled, though graceful, it is structurally sound with no wobbles or creaks... after all it is Victorian Build and they were geniuses (whatever happened to them... us?).
Fewer of these petite stands survived at all, and many of those were used (loved) well and may have worn caning as does this one. I have sourced the close weave Raffia sheets nececerray to restore this stand and I may get to this project soon. If so, I may re-list it to reflect the cost of restoration, or as originally intended, I may un-list the stand and keep it.
This is not a 1950\'s reproduction, those are out there too, and commonly confused... my stand is approximately 125 years old.
