This old Victorian Mourning necklace is a beauty. The Vulcanite pendant is not only fabulously detailed, it is layered to a height of 7/8 of an inch. The base of the pendant is deeply scalloped and in the center is an oval panel with an ornate floral ornament, the leaves of which extend beyond the oval disk.

The pendant hangs from its original Vulcanite bail and is 2 inches long and 1.25 inches wide. The Whitby jet hand faceted beaded necklace is hand knotted between each of the beads and is 27 inches long.

The Vulcanite pendant is a deep brown color and not black. Vulcanite\'s issue is that it is light sensitive and obviously this necklace was a favorite of its original owner because the light of day took some of the depth out of the Vulcanite\'s original blackness.

The carving is so exceptional that it really isn\'t an issue. In fact, the lighter tone actually highlights the details even more.

Vulcanite darkens with the application of almond oil, which rehydrates it so infusing it every now and them with the oil, and also the Whitby jet, assures that they stay in optimum condition virtually forever. So doing this every now and then is a good habit and your jewelry will reflect your care.

The necklace\'s clasp is its original silver filigree slide lock closure, a favorite of the Victorians to secure their most precious jewelry, and surely this was one to the woman who wore it.
