Maker:
Thomas Whartenby of Philadelphia
Country of origin: United States
Era: 1840's

I am pleased to offer a superb mid 19th Century card case made by Thomas Whartenby of Philadelphia circa 1840.

A respected and sort after maker, Whartenby is recorded as partnered with Peter Bumm 1816-1818 and later as T.W. & Co. 1847-1852.

Of American coin silver standard(constructed of virtually melted down coins) and finely decorated with engine turned lines this gives a handsome yet delicate appearance to the case.

Calling card cases were a virtual necessity for any person of respectable social standing in the 1840's and highly personable pieces to both men and women alike and this case is an excellent example of echos from the past.

In very good condition, details as follows:
  • beautiful patina
  • some slight tarnish in places and small dings in corners
