Antique Victorian era sewing stiletto – carved bone bovine handle spindle design - (I do not know if this is cow bone, but makes one put the type of bone into the description, or it gets pulled!)

I first thought this piece was a crochet hook with the tiniest damaged bent head I had ever seen, but in researching antique sewing items, this appears to be a stiletto – not a crochet hook – the metal end tapers down to very tiny and has just the bit of a bend at the tip -

For such a surprisingly simple tool, the variety of the stilleto is endless. Essentially, like the sword from which it takes its name, it is a long pointed blade secured to a handle. It was used for making eyelets for cards or laces, but in its finer form could be used for pricking out designs onto the fabric to be embroidered. It was also extensively used for eyelet work, better known today as Broiderie Anglaise. Stilettos are often found with a sheath to protect the point, or they unscrew and store within the handle. Examples range from the workmanlike to the most elaborate.

Size: approx. length of the entire piece is 5 3/4ths inches. Approx length of the carved bone handle is 2 ¼ inches

Condition: carved handle is lovely - no chips, no cracks, the metal does show aged patina and possibly some tarnish - I could not find any maker\'s marks.

Carved handle is a Victorian spindle type of design – I have a shoe button hook in this same design alsto listed – in the final photos you can see both pieces together. There is a bit of discoloration in the shoebutton hook – the stiletto does not have this discoloration – both pieces are listed separately.
