There were times when Montblanc, Pelikan or other European pen makers, would look at a Kaweco pen first before making their own. Kaweco at the end of the 19th century and up to the 70’s, was one of the biggest manufacturers in Europe, everyone had a Kaweco pen, they stood out from the competition as they made the highest quality and best designed pens at the time. The company was founded in 1883 as “Koch Weber & Co” by the friends Luce Koch and Enßlen Weber in Heidelberger Germany, Koch Weber & CO, thus KA WE CO. They had a great start and up to 1929 they had several thousand employees, with revenue at over a million DM. However, in 1929, the same year Pelikan patented their piston filler, Kaweco filed for bankruptcy, unbelievably as they could not sustain their enormous growth. A considerably smaller fountain pen company known as Aurumia, bought the factory, and decided to use the same name old name Kaweco, as it represented superb writing instruments. Since 1920's up to late 1970’s, Kaweco made some of the most luxurious pens in Europe, the most expensive and high end pens, extraordinarily build quality. By the late 1940's Kaweco had at least one major retail store in all bigger cities, from London to Istanbul, and this was not the case with any other manufacturer in Europe. Here we present one of the most famous Kaweco lines, Sport mini pocket size pens sets, 16V and 619. These are made out of black resin the signature material of Montblanc, which is a glass component mixed with plastic that gives the pen a unique shine. This is possibly the best material to make pens from, as it does not scratch easily and always shines. Both pens are 12 sided (dodecagons), thus they perfectly reflect light. These pen are true pocket pens, and their design was first forged in early 1930’s. These particular pens were made in the mid 1960’s. Both pens are in absolute mint condition, no cosmetic or functional defects what so ever, 100% originally preserved in their original genuine leather green pocket pouch. The fountain pen is EF size nib, super flexible, will write with ease up to B with a gentle push, and feels very smooth on the paper. Piston works perfectly, clear see through ink window. Both pens have gold plated trimmings and gold plated logos located on top of the cap and push button, crisp imprints. The Ballpoint pen has a specially designed Kaweco patented steel micro ball guided mechanism, which is extremely precise, reliable and easy to use. Both pens even though short have a perfect grip and feel as they are thick, however the fountain pen with the cap posted is as any normal pen, has a great balance and feel since the cap is quite long. This original clever Kaweco design was ripped off by Pilot and other companies who made similar pens years later. It’s worth noting that most of the Kaweco nibs are flexible, as this was their principle manufacturing, but unlike other brands, Kaweco made their nibs in a special way so they cannot get damaged easily. This is very unique manufacturing process and only reliable way otherwise the nibs get damaged if dropped as on many other brands. This is achieved as the nib is not the same thickness as most of the nibs are, it is slightly thinner in the mid portion of the nib thus giving the desired flexibility, but also making the exposed front section quite sturdy thus protected. It's no wonder then why not rarely Kaweco made the nibs for Montblanc, Pelikan and other German manufacturers, they were simply the best at it.
