Vintage 1930s 40s Half Belt Leather Jacket California Ronald Reagan Styled Rare For SaleWhat an amazing early leather jacket. Extremely rare - in all my time collecting, I think I've only ever seen one other for sale "Styled by Ronnie Reagan, Warner Bros First National Star" for California Sportswear Co. Perfect for the leather jacket collector and Ronald Reagan memorabilia collector. My Buy It Now price reflects the rarity and desirability of the jacket, but I think is a pretty good deal for this jacket. Snap it up!The jacket probably dates to the late 1930s or early 40s - the Talon zipper with sunburst stopper box and U-shaped stop teeth is right for that era, and that's when Reagan was at the height of his acting fame, and could arrange such commercial deals. The jacket was made by California Sportswear Co., certainly one of the best makers of the era (see Rin Tanaka's books for a good discussion of this company), well known for their innovative and attractive designs. It's made of what they called "Washable Goatskin", which I guess is a treatment they give to the outer part of the hide to make it easier to wash. It's styled (apparently by Ronnie Reagan, but we'll take that with a pinch of salt) in a very Western way - a long halfbelt "trapper" style that brings with it thoughts of the plains. Very American … very Reagan. The patch pockets (3) only add to the western feel, and the small zippered pocket at the lower right is a lovely touch. There are ventilation holes under the arms (see picture) and the epaulettes on the shoulders are a nice design touch. The rear features a half belt with side adjustor cinch straps. Above the belt are 3 small pleats for shaping. The jacket body and arms are lined in a sharkskin-like shimmery fabric, probably an early acetate or similar synthetic very common in the era. It's a very nice weight for a spring or fall weather jacket. This one's got real style. You'll certainly stand out wearing this!Condition: The leather is in good sound condition, but with signs of age and a nice patina. There is age related wear - to the shoulders, elbows, arm cuffs, and scattered scuffs. This all certainly comes under the banner of "patina". There are no holes, weak spots, etc. that I can find. One of the leather cuff buttons is missing. The leather closure button of the lower right hip pocket is starting to come apart but should be able to be shored up - a little superglue should do the trick. The liner is torn at neck and arm ends. it also appears to have been glued to the hide at the neck, but having tried tentatively to detach it, I think it will come off without damaging the hide, or damaging the liner any more. I'd say this is a candidate for being relined. There is a rather fragile label inside the sippered pocket that states "Lot 7995, 40, 3". I suspect that none of these numbers reflect the size, and that the meaning is lost to us forever.Size. I'd say this fits like a size 37, but see measurements for exact size.
