Pictorial Street Map
1937Stunning color lithographic map of Moscow by Michael Getmanski dating from the late 1920s to early 1930s. Color-keyed numerical listings identifying in English: Museums, Monuments, Railway Stations, Government and Educational Institutions, and (in by far the longest listing) theatres and musical venues. Located on the map are the Bolshoi Theatre, the Moscow Art Theatres 1 and 2, The Little Maly, Vakhtangov, Kamerny, and Meyerhold Theatres, the Stanislavski Opera Theatre, the Nemirovich Danchenko Musical Theatre, the Jewish Theatre, the Gypsy Theatre, the Workers' Children's Theatre, and more than two dozen additional sites dedicated to music and theatre. In its exceptionally detailed focus on important sites, the map documents the extraordinary vitality of Moscow's cultural institutions in the early years of the Soviet Union.Intourist was created in 1929 to promote the USSR’s image overseas. Stalin’s Russia wasn’t a closed country by any means, although many western visitors arrived as part of delegations sent by trade unions and other sympathetic groups. Getmansky’s plan is a fairly conventional tourist map, listing hotels and cultural attractions. Getmasnky was a graphic artist and illustrator who designed book covers and illustrations for magazines and children’s books as well as a travel guide to the Soviet Union issued by Intourist in 1936. This map was also issued in a French language version. In terms of date, the Monument to Minin and Pozharsky was moved from the centre of Red Square to its present site in front of St Basil’s Cathedral in 1936, as shown on the map. The Hotel Novomoskovskaya was converted into a residential hostel for the Department of Foreign Policy in 1939 and to narrow down the date range even further, October or Oktyabrsky Railway Station (Moscow’s oldest, opened as Nikolaevsky in 1849) was renamed Leningradsky Railway Station in 1937.M E A S U R E S
