Vintage 1939 John Strobl's Viennese Restaurant Enamel Souvenir Compact New York For Sale
Vintage 1939 JOHN STROBL'S Viennese RESTAURANT Enamel SOUVENIR COMPACT New York
This is a vintage souvenir compact from John Strobl's Viennese Restaurant, which was located at 1256 Third Avenue at 72nd Street in New York City, circa 1939. The compact is made of brass goldtone metal and the front of the compact has enamel decoration and along with the name and address of restaurant, says on it "A Day Without Wine is like a Day without Sunshine." The petite compact measures 2 1/2" wide x 1 3/4" tall. The inside of the compact has a mirror, an empty covered depression for face powder and a powder puff that is unused. There is no powdery residue, the inside is clean, so the compact was apparently never used. The compact is unsigned and has wear and chipping to the enamel lid and a noticeable spot of substantial verdigris (greening) to the metal on the lower left corner due to age (see photos.) A terrific, old souvenir piece!
