Vintage 1940's 14k Gold Carved Coral Cameo Pendant :
Circa 1940's, this tear drop shaped coral cameo pendant features a left facing back view of a lovely young woman turned slightly to the side. A large flower or crescent moon is poised in her hair, so it is possible this beauty is the goddess Diana or Flora.Petite in size but definitely a charmer, the cameo is bezel set in a 14K yellow gold pendant only frame measuring 1 inch tall.
The cameo alone measures 19.8mm tall (3/4") by 8.5mm (just under 3/8") at its wide base. The frame includes a stationary wide mouthed split bail and itself measures 25mm (1') tall including the bail, 20.8mm (13/16") tall without bail, by 10mm (3/8") at its widest point. The pendant weighs 1.7 grams.
This left facing beauty was gifted with highly detailed facial features, a difficult feat in a carving of this size. As well, her hair is highly detailed, pulled up in a low chignon and adorned with either a large flower or perhaps a crescent moon. She wears a traditional stola draped across one shoulder which dips low to expose a beautiful neckline and back, a provocative yet popular pose used by carvers in the 1920's to 1940's.
The coral is a rich salmon hue, natural and undyed. The hue is uniform and without white veins on front or back. The carving is polished to a nice gloss. The backside is flat cut with two small fissures exposed just below center. There are no fissures on the front side. The coral is supple and the carving retains its original crispness, the details of which are best appreciated under magnification. There are no chips or cracks in the coral.
There are no hallmarks or makers marks. The frame has been tested at 14K. All is in excellent condition.
