CHARLES S. KAHN Lucite Purse Heavy Handcrafted Carved Diamond Cut
Splendid example of a handcrafted early 1950s
Charles S. Kahn clear Lucite Purse. A wonderful octagonal purse body is
capped by an extremely thick and deeply carved lid in a diamond pattern.
The thick handle, also heavily carved expands along its length...much wider in
the center than at the hinged joints. The "Chas-Kahn" signature "three
ball clasp" is in evidence, as the paper tag was likely removed long ago.
On the back of the purse, parallel to one of the "corners", is a fine, expertly
joined seam, giving testament to the hand made construction of the piece, prior
to the seamless machine constructed pieces of the later 1950s and 1960s.
Four small domes affixed to the bottom, create the "feet" of the purse.
Charles S. Kahn created hand made purses
starting in the early 1950s in Miami, Florida. The earliest purses were hand
constructed of extremely heavy hand finished Lucite, at that time a fairly new
invention (1931) by DuPont. They were hand carved and assembled and
quickly became the favorite accessory of actresses and show girls. Later,
lighter purses, made possible by machine construction, made them affordable for
the masses. Today, Charles S. Kahn's delightful creations routinely fetch the
highest prices in the collector market.
Measurements: Overall Height: Approximately 11 3/4"
Purse Body: 5 7/8" x 4 1/2" x 5 3/4" tall from
the top of the lid to the surface on which it sits.
Handle: 5 3/4" tall from the top of the purse
to the top of the handle. It is 3/8" thick & 1" wide at the widest,
tapering to 3/8" at the hinges.
Top: 1/2" thick
Condition: In very, very good vintage condition, with very few tiny fine
scratches attesting to the gentlest of use. The clasp shows only a small
amount of softening in the gold plate on the highest plane of the center ball.
The plating on the rivets on the clasp has worn to reveal the deep patina
of the brass beneath. There are no stains or odors whatsoever. There are
some very insignificant little clear/white dots along the back seam, where the
purse was joined together...it is likely from the sealant used to join the
panels...only seen when you look very closely...mentioned for accuracy.
The purse latches properly, closes with a snap and remains securely fastened
Hallmarks/Markings: None found - Charles S. Kahn used paper labels and
hang tags. The purse is clearly the work of Kahn, based on the "signature"
hardware (clasp) and design/construction.
Circa: Early 1950s - Mid Century
