1960's - 1970's Vintage Brass Abraham Lincoln Bookends
Sculpted by Alexander Geiges From A 1865 Photograph by Mathew Brady
This set of Lincoln Bust bookends was sculpted by Alexander Geiges (1877-1962). Mr. Geiges was an artisan employed by the Gorham Silver Company of Providence of Rhode Island. Gorham Co. artisans also sculpted the famous monument of George Washington in the Capitol's Rotunda, the statue of Theodore Roosevelt that overlooks the Museum of Natural History in New York, and the famous "Independent Man which tops the Rhode Island State House. Mr. Geiges used a1865 portrait photograph by Mathew B. Brady,as the basis for this work. Brady is well known for his American Civil War & mid-19th century politicians photographs.
Both bookends are in amazing condition (see enlarged photo's). Although some set were finished in silver plate, this set has an original brass finish. They were cast in spelter (zinc alloy) metal. Each measures 7.5" H, 5" W
& 3.5" D & weighs 3.7 pounds. Both are
relabeled on the felt bottoms of the base; no cracks, dents, scratches. Very fine vintage heavy metal bookends, with very little surface
wear (see photos), terrific for a home library of office.
