Vintage 1978 Micro Seiki Ddx1000 Turntable + Speed Controller. Stunning ++ For Sale
You're offerding on a rare direct-drive Micro Seiki (Japan) DDX1000 turntable in excellent operational and cosmetic condition.Launched to great acclaim in 1978, the DDX1000 was the statement piece for Micro, who until then had been releasing small-volume excellent-but-conventional turntables of their own, as well as providing components and turntable designs for other companies such as Luxman and their top-tier models. Micro were regarded in Japan though as the black-belt champion of precision turntable design and had kept many tricks up their sleeve...the DDX1000 is a perfect example; it eschewed the established plinth format completely, opting instead for a heavy cast alloy frame with three legs (comprehensively damped and adjustable via knurled feet) which also acted as mounting turrets for tonearm pods (meaning you could have up to 3 tonearms mounted simultaneously). Suspended in the centre of the outriding feet was a massive direct drive motor and above that the gorgeous strobe-edged platter, damped with a formidable cork sub-mat and 1cm thick rubber mat. It's stunning stuff and has been referenced by many other turntable designers since, but never with the DDX's sculptural authority and resolve. Speed is incredibly stable at .025%, courtesy of the strobe lamp which also acts a frequency generator reference (and is constantly checking the number of stripes it "sees"). The on/off button and speed controller is set in a separate panel with speed finely adjustable via knobs for both 33 and 45 rpm.Musical retrieval is spectacular; there's no sense of notchiness or hunting from the motor, just smooth, consistent and apparently effortless pitch and pace. The motor cannot be heard when it's running and the bearing is built to the sort of standard and tolerance you'd expect from Micro's best. The DDX1000 was originally sold without a tonearm (the idea being that the astute audiophile buyer could add his own) but the included AX-1G pod/bracket will accommodate most 9"-10" arms such as Micro Seiki MA505 (obviously), Grace, Rega etc. The MA505 arm pictured in the last two photos is not included with the turntable but is available in another of my sales. Cosmetic condition is excellent with very few signs of any wear. The speed controller unit has a tiny nibble to the bottom of the alloy faceplate (see photo 4) but is very hard to notice at all. The alloy of the turntable itself is free from any clouding and the mats, armpod, platter and feet are beautiful. I've never seen another DDX1000 in remotely as good condition as this one.Operation is flawless. Included is the original cotton handling glove (seriously), the 45rpm adapter ring and a copy of the comprehensive service manual. This one is an original 220-240volt unit.Pickup is from Annandale during business hours or I can courier Australia-wide and internationally.
