Vintage Antique Stewart & Bauer Monogram Banjo :
S. S. Stewart & Bauer Monogram 5- string banjo "Grade 2." Serial # 56217 for what that is worth. The serial # used by S&B should not be used to date the banjo with the info on Mugwumps. This banjo was clearly made after SSS had died and Bauer had begun to squeeze the company. It is a decent banjo.
27 1/8" scale, 11" X 2 1/4" nickel silver clad rim "double wired." Some dents here and there but this one has not had the nickel plating all "polished" off. Hooks match, but missing some plating. Four brackets are replacements. Calf skin head from Bill Miller.
22 frets-- or three octave neck. Roughly 19 3/4" long nut to rim, there is a shim at the heel that was there when I bought it and I have just kept it in. There was a broken off piece of the fingerboard at the fifth string "pip," I patched in a piece of ebony, not perfect but works-- shown in the photo. "Patent" friction pegs work with no problems (nylon or gut string only). Small square mother of pearl position markers. Thin ebony fingerboard with some wear at the first and second positions. Fingerboard chip at the rim that looks lit it was filled with some wood putty at some point in it's life. Frets in decent shape with lots of life provided no wire strings are used. +/- 3/16 high at the 12th fret.
Currently 7/16 high maple bridge but could take a 1/2" with no issues. Nylgut strings with a mapletailpiece of my own make (I cannot stand the Asian no-knots and don't use them).
Dents, finish wear and scratches to the neck. Fully playable as is (I do play it, I've just got to let some of them go).
My name is Joel Hooks and I am a real person who lives in Massachusetts. My phone number is 214-500-0527. I will answer questions.
I will not take offers and end the sale early. Whatever you were willing to offer- offer it, you could get it for less. Sorry, USA only as it gets real expensive to ship overseas and I really don't want to deal with that. Local pickup is fine.
This is a 100 year old banjo and is not perfect, no returns.
