Vintage BIRKS Sterling Silver TEA STRAINER 1941 Canadian WWII Era:

This is a wonderful sterling silver tea strainer made by high end Canadian silversmith and jeweller Birks - Birks is considered to be the Tiffany of Canada. The piece is made in a late art deco style with two pierced handles that would rest across the opening of a cup while water is being poured through the tea held in the strainer bowl. One handle is stamped on the underside with “ Birks Sterling”, “10/55” and with the Birks hallmarks on its underside. Birks used the London assay date codes after 1925, so this piece would date to 1941. The piece measures 5” across the handles and weighs 26 grams, almost an ounce. This is a quality piece - interesting to think that this was made during the darkest days of WWII when a reassuring cup of tea was truly needed! This is a wonderful sterling silver tea strainer made by high end Canadian silversmith and jeweller Birks - Birks is considered to be the Tiffany of Canada. The piece is made in a late art deco style with two pierced handles that would rest across the opening of a cup while water is being poured through the tea held in the strainer bowl. One handle is stamped on the underside with “ Birks Sterling”, “10/55” and with the Birks hallmarks. Birks used the London assay date codes after 1925, so this piece would date to 1941. The piece measures 5” across the handles and weighs 26 grams, almost an ounce. It is in very good condition, although there is some tarnish that would disappear with a proper cleaning - I polished it quickly with a gentle silver polish, but with a bit more effort, this would come out beautifully.

This is a quality piece - interesting to think that this was made during the darkest days of WWII when a reassuring cup of tea was truly needed!
