Japanese Silk:In Japan, the silk industry there was predominant in the 1930s-50\'s, but it is less common now.[1]The practice of harvesting silk began in Japan in the 3rd century, when the technique was adapted from theirChineseandKoreanneighbors. They refined the techniques, and Japanese silk became widely known as being of very high quality. {wikipedia}Fun Scarf Facts:So who invented scarves?

No one really knows who is responsible for the creation of the scarf. It is believed they originated from Ancient Rome and the purpose of them was to keep clean. Their original name was “sudarium” which is latin for Sweat cloth. And yes the old forms of scarves were as appealing as their names suggest… The scarves were used to wipe sweat from ones face when it got hot.

So when did scarves become known for more than keeping your face clean?

Some form of scarf was around soldier\'s neck for protection from the cold while conquering parts of Europe. Roman soldiers wore red scarves to identify their ranks. After the fall of Rome empire the scarves lived on to be worn by Romanian and Croatian soldiers. When the Croatian army came to Paris in 1648 cheering their victory over Turks every soldier wore a scarf. However the scarves they wore were nothing like the ones you see today and most closely resembled cravats.

So wait a minute… Cravats became scarves?

Yes and no – there was a split if you like. These cravats becoming popular lead to more and more designs emerging. On seeing the cravats on the Croation army Louis XIV of France like them so much he hired a scarf maker to sit in his court. He also decided scarves should be used to display ones royalty – a phase that luckily for us scarf lovers never really caught on. Over the years scarves become more and more popular both for adornment and for the more practical purpose as protection from the cold. In the 19thcentury scarves and cravats had become so different that a new name was created for the scarf cache nez, which literally translates to “hiding the nose\".

Finally tell me something scandalous about the scarf…At the end of 17th century Peter the Great created a Russian army all dressed in their uniform to be easily identifiable Peter decided they were missing the final touch – a scarf and added this to the uniform. These remained popular until 1796 when Pavel I became emperor of Russia. He disliked the scarf so much that wearing them was strictly forofferden for soldiers. Rather sinisterly his dislike proved to be not without merit as in 1801 Pavel was strangled by an assassin –using a scarf. {thanks smart turnout.com}
ABOUT ME:
My career began in the Garment District of New York City. I remember going on lunch breaks walking by a plethora of Italian men who were hanging out chatting. They were the sample makers. I went to sample sales at every opportunity while I was scrounging to make ends meet and still look fabulous.

Fast forward many years and I have been fortunate to travel the world while working in fashion and retail. I have a tendency to like European designers, especially Escada and Feraud as their fit is consistent and seems to work with the American body type (especially for those of us who are not perfect!)

When in Frankfurt, I would take two trains and a taxi to hit my favorite outlet store. I believe in the European way of ‘wardrobing’: having a few, high quality items versus a lot of junk.

But our closets are bursting and it\'s time to go and I have begun exploring other closets to add to this one ... always hunting with that eye for quality and workmanship!

I promise to always describe and measure accurately, and will note any flaws so offer with confidence.
