Vintage Bavarian / German Carnival (fasching - Fasnacht) Mask - Hand Carved Wood For Sale
Up for sale is a vintage Catholic carnival mask from Bavaria or possibly Baden-Württemburg, Germany. This "portrait" mask represents a female peasant and is typically used in the celebration known as Karneval, Fasching or Fasnacht (sometimes Fastnacht). Fasching is the pre-Lent festival equivalent, usually beginning the week before Ash Wednesday. Soon after Fasching season opens, a mock government of eleven guilds (Zünfte) are elected, along with a carnival prince and princess who basically plan the carnival festivities. The guilds parade down the streets wearing masks and costumes, culminating in the biggest parades on Rosenmontag, the Monday before Ash Wednesday.This mask is hand-carved from a single piece of wood, almost certainly linden wood. It is intended to have a rough look to accentuate the peasant nature of the person represented. The exact age of this mask is unknown, but it definitely shows signs of age. Probably mid-twentieth century.
