My name is RJ Nelkin. My family has been diamond dealers since the 1920's when my grandfather MS Nelkin started in the trade as a young man. In the 1960's my father William W. Nelkin left the family business and started his own diamond company, William W. Nelkin, inc located at 608 5th Ave. New York City, New York. I started working for him in the late 1960's. About that time Cartier (just up the street from us) was purchased by a company named Kenton Corporation they also bought Georg Jensen Silver, Mark Cross Leather Goods and a few other luxury companies. We had been supplying loose diamonds and fine pieces to Cartier for years but increased our involvement when my dad and grandfather began buying up stock in Kenton Corp. We were given the opportunity to operate the Cartier Boutique in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in N.Y.C. This gave us access to many Cartier copyright and trademark pieces. While we were buying up Kenton Stock, unbeknownst to us, financier Meshulam Rikilis (he married singer Pia Zadora and bought her silent movie stars Mary Pickfords estate Pickfair in Hollywood) was doing the same in order to gain control of Cartier and sell off Kenton's other assets. Well you might have guessed the outcome, he beat us at our own game and we got left holding the bag. However, we retained much of the inventory we had with Cartier together with many of the customers that trusted us with their fine jewelry purchases. RJ Nelkin
