Vintage Christmas Mickey Mouse Boxed Noma Light Set, Disney Characters, Ca. 1935 For Sale
Welcome to our sale! Many of you know
us as longtime collectors and sellers of antique and vintage Hallowe'en, Christmas,
and Easter holiday memorabilia, paper ephemera, antique dolls and toys, and
lovely old china and glassware. For your consideration, we present an amazing vintage
set of Walt Disney Enterprises’ Mickey Mouse Light String by Noma! This superb
set comes in its original box and was made in the 1930s.
The box reads Mickey Mouse Lights by Noma with Mazda Lamps, Walt Disney Ent., Noma Electric Corporation, See Them Illuminated! The box cover features outstanding illustrations of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse decorating the Christmas tree with their friendPluto carrying a sign. The box indicates that this set had a catalog number of 105 and further states Noma Electric Corporation, New York, NY, Printed in USA.
Quite expensive for the time, this desirable set of Christmas decorations apparently sold for a whopping $1.85!!! Thebox measures 16 ½” long x 6 ½” high x 2 ¼” deep.
The Disney characters pictured on the sides of the box are Donald Duck, Horace Horsecollar, Minnie Mouse, Baby Mickey and Minnie, Mickey Mouse, Clarabelle and Pluto.
When opening the box one lifts the interior lid which has the bright and magnificent illustrations and graphics that appear on the box lid. This design allowed the box to be used as a store display as well. The lights themselves have a cloth cord and all eight brightly colored shades for the bulbs are present. Each cover is also decorated with Disney characters enjoying the holiday festivities. Inside of the box thedirections are alsopresent. We did not remove the bulbs and covers from the box in order to maintain their pristine and undisturbed condition. The interior of the box also states that these lights could also be used all year round for children’s parties and other festive occasions.
The exact condition is as follows: we tried the set and it does not illuminate however as the directions state the set burns in series – “if a lamp is loose or defective the circuit is broken and the set will not light. Before turning on the current, screw each light tightly into the socket.” It then further explains how to find the burned-out lamp. We see cord fraying where each cord enters the socket. We see no cracks or fading to the lamp covers, and the illustrations on the covers are bright and crisp and appear to be close to pristine. The original box has only a tiny bit of wear at the bottom corners and one surface paper lift to one corner as well. There is a tear on the underside of the box at a corner. The lithographed colors on this wonderful example are bright and crisp, and show little or no signs of fading.
If you are a vintage or antique Christmas memorabilia collector and/ora fan of all things Disneyana, we think this amazing set of Disney / Noma Christmas lights, in their original box and in their magnificent condition, just might be the perfect acquisition for you!
Here is a wonderful description of how Disney characters were licensed during the 1930s that we found on WaltDisney.org
During the height of the Great Depression, Mickey Mouse reigned as “King of Toyland.” Hundreds of items featuring the mouse’s likeness could be found for sale in every major department store across the nation. The man responsible for the coronation of Mickey was a former hat salesman named Herman Samuel “Kay” Kamen.
Walt and Roy Disney signed Kamen to a contract on July 1, 1932, and when existing merchandise agreements expired a little over one year later, Kamen became Disney’s sole merchandise licensing agent.
The Kamen/Disney partnership quickly became one of the most successful collaborations in business history. Within six months, Kamen doubled retail sales of character merchandise to $6 million, and by 1935 over $35,000,000 worth of character merchandise had been sold. By the late 1930s, royalty income from merchandise exceeded revenue from film rentals.
From his New York office Kamen and his group of in-house artists and sales reps successfully marketed Disney’s stable of characters to hundreds of manufacturers. The list of licensees that created Disney products reads like a “Who’s Who” of American business giants: Ingersoll, Lionel, General Mills, and Cartier were just a few of the companies who signed contracts to sell all manner of Disney merchandise.
NOMA produced several sets of Disney-themed Christmas lights beginning in 1935. Sets came with a light strand decorated with eight plastic shades, each of which had a decal featuring Disney characters engaged in various Christmas activities. Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphony sets were available in the U.S., while Snow White and Pinocchio sets were available in Canada.
