Vintage Double Hunter Pocket Watch 800 Silver W Gold Overlay Italian Or German:
This small but well-made pocket watch is from an estate collection and it is a bit of a mystery, to me. The watch measures approximately 1 1/8" in diameter. The front opens, and then the back opens to reveal a second layer of metal. I believe this is a double hunter style watch. According the the hallmarks, I am thinking this watch was made in Italy, but I see several forums that may point to German origins. The first case on back opens to reveal the following marks inside: "METAL" (inside an ornate frame) and the number 130233 with "W" underneath. The inner case is marked, on the left with something that looks like a stylized bird, then underneath is either wings or feathers over "0,800"; then a tiny symbol is underneath the number. On the right hand side, is a crescent moon next to a crown with a cross on top. Underneath all these marks, at center, is the number 130232, and under this is the letter V. The Fast/Slow switch has F/S, as on American watches, but also has A/R. In musical terms, the Italian word "Accelerando" is to speed up and "Ritardando" is to slow down. This is another clue that points to an Italian maker. Condition: The watch has been opened roughly; I see some scratches and bending at both openings. The face and hands appear in very good condition, as does the crystal. The watch is not running. It will wind, but there is no tension; it just winds and winds. The gears turn, but nothing happens as far as winding or ticking. Metal: The .800 indicates silver content; I have acid tested the silver outer parts, and they test as .800 silver. The parts that have the coppery gold look on the outside top and bottom appear to be gold plate or rolled gold overlay. It tests as 12 karat. There is wear to the plating in a few areas. Feel free to ask questions, as I specialize in vintage jewelry and my knowledge of watches is limited.
