Vintage Duck Decoy - George M. Sibley ("mr X") Chicago, Il/whitehall, Mi C1899:
Vintage hollow drake bluebill duck decoy made by George M. Sibley/Sibley & Co of Chicago, Illinois and Whitehall, Michigan c1899-1902. This is the "MR. X" decoy as it was referred to by the decoy community for over 40 years prior to Joe Tonelli's inadvert discovery of an old advert, and the subsequant research by Donna Tonneli tracing its history inside and outside the Illinois River region where many of the decoys turned up. Structurally in great shape (esp for its 110 year age!) with a left turned-head complete with unique insert bill design and ingenious internal ballast weight. I believe the bird to be mostly in a very early repaint, with the "TRAILE" rig stamp under that paint and then a "CARSON" rig stamp, which resembles that seen on some original paint Robert Elliston bluebills. Also has a 166# written on bottom, I was informed that this particular decoy was once owned by the late Joe French who is credited with first rediscovering the decoys in 1952. - , $15 flat shipping and insurance.
