Bretagne, Languedoc & Normandie Coats of Arms Enamel Crests on Bronze Link Panels
Great souvenir bracelet from France comprised of enamel panels linked with book hinges. Two are the Bretagne crest or coat of arms separating the Languedoc and Normandie panels. By the fact the Provence of Languedoc ended in 1956, this bracelet was made in 1930s-50s. Certainly before 1956!
According to family folklore, it was a gift from a relative’s fiancé stationed in Normandy during WWII. There’s no one left alive to corroborate this story but it was worn often and well loved by this aunt, who was rarely seen without it on.
The clasp is worn smooth and the maker’s mark has all but rubbed off. We’ve seen similar bracelets marked “Made in France” and some have the additional maker mark “EDET PARIS”. We believe all that remains on our clasp is the bottom half of the word FRANCE. It’s illegible so look at the pictures and decide for yourself!
The enamel is bright and in wonderful condition. The bronze metal has some wear, light scratches and discolored spots to be expected in an old bracelet. But overall, lovely. Again, look at pictures and ask questions.
Bretagne Coats of Arms: crown over crest held by 2 dogs (white on dark blue):
Bretagne is the historic province of Brittany in France’s northwestern region. It is a hilly peninsula extending out toward the Atlantic Ocean. Its lengthy, rugged coastline is dotted with beach resorts such as chic Dinard and walled Saint-Malo, built on rock in the English Channel. The Pink Granite Coast is famed for its unusual, blush-hued sand and rocks. Brittany is known for its abundant prehistoric menhirs (a type of megalith and is the site of some of the world's oldest standing architecture which date to the early 5th millennium BC.
Languedoc Coats of Arms: Maltese cross crest (red on light blue)
Languedoc is a historical coastal region in southern France, extending from Provence to the Pyrenees Mountains and the border with Spain. It was a former province of France in the south of France with Toulouse as the capital city. The government of Languedoc was created in the mid-16th century. Between 1956 and 2016, the former province of Languedoc was divided between four regions: Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrénées, Rhône-Alpes and Auvergne. In 2016, the French regions were reduced in number, with Languedoc-Rousillon and Midi-Pyrénées merging to form Occitanie. The area is a major wine producer, with Vin de Pays d'Oc and sparkling Crémant de Limoux among its best-known varieties.
Normandie Coats of Arms: crest with 2 lions (red on light blue)
Normandie or Normandy is a region of northern France. Its varied coastline includes white-chalk cliffs and WWII beachheads, including Omaha Beach, site of the famous D-Day landing. Just off the coast, the rocky island of Mont-Saint-Michel is topped by a soaring Gothic abbey. The city of Rouen, dominated by Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, is where military leader and Catholic saint Joan of Arc was executed in 1431.
