Vintage ABSTRACT MODERNIST OIL PAINTING Mid Century Modern WPA PAFA LISTED 1970s
Magnificent color abstraction with monumental sense of scale and upward lifting rock formations. Lemon yellow and salmon pink highlights ignite this otherworldly composition, which appears to shift and tip backward into the picture plane. Outstanding use of both color and formal dimensionality.
This work richly evokes feelings for the beauty of nature. Natural forms or objects are suggested in a rather metaphysical way, transforming abstract shapes into representations of pure energetic beauty.
Reminiscent of the early American Modernists, such as Arthur Dove and Marsden Hartley.
- Oil painting on masonite- Signed at lower right. - Estate stamp on back. - Title on back \"Jagged Rocks\".- Excellent vintage condition. - White washed Modernist wood frame with gilded border.- Measures 40\" x 36.25\" in frame. Painting is 32.5\" x 28.5\".
ARTIST: G. Ralph Smith 1907-2007LIVED/ACTIVE: Ohio, PennsylvaniaBIOGRAPHY: G. Ralph Smith (1907- 2007) was a painter, illustrator and lithographer. He is perhaps best known for his regionalist lithographs from the 1930’s and 40’s, but devoted most of his life to producing oil paintings.Born in Circleville Ohio, Smith graduated from the Columbus Art School in 1929 and went on to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1937, he was awarded the Cresson Traveling Fellowship, which allowed him to travel through Europe for several months pursuing his art. In 1939 he married fellow PAFA graduate, Elizabeth Brehm Matos and settled in Germantown PA where he would remain for the rest of his life.
In the late 1930’s Smith collaborated with the German lithographer Theodore Cuno, known for his work with Joseph Pennel and Benton Spruance. They produced a series of twelve lithographs which typify the spirit of Philadelphia Regionalism during the great depression.
Many of Smith’s paintings were inspired by trips to Rockport, MA from the late 1940’s to the late 1960’s as well as to Southern Maine, Manayunk and Wissahickon, PA. On these trips he crafted boldly colored land and seascapes.
Smith’s work has been exhibited at numerous institutions and can be found in the permanent collections of the Columbus Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Woodmere Art Museum.
