Ghouls and goblins – they don’t care.

But as our friends know quite well,

All year long we love to SCARE!

Many of you know us as longtime collectors and sellers of vintage and antique Hallowe'en memorabilia, antique dolls, old toys, and lovely old china and glassware. It’s a little more than two months until our favorite holiday! For your all-year-long Hallowe'en loving pleasure, we are HAUNTINGly happy to present a PURRRRfectly wonderful, pulp, cat-on-a-fence lantern that was made in America circa 1940s.

Please meet Felicia! This lovely piece of Hallowe'en historyiscalled “cat-on-a-fence” because she is peering over fence posts just waiting toSCARE little trick or treaters on All Hallows' Eve. Felicia was made from pressed paper pulp which many refer to as paper or papiermache. Kitty cat lanterns like Felicia were made in both orange and black, and this example has incredible warm and rich, brownish-orange paint with black airbrushed fence posts. Notice her kitty-cat paws clinging on to the fence!

This lanternmeasures 7 ½” tall (10” to the top of the handle) x 6” wide x 5” deep.

This FRIGHTfully fabulous feline appears to be unused since there isNO wax andNO burn marks in her interior. Amazingly, paper pulp lanterns were often lit using real wax candles! To give Felicia her glorious glow, we used a battery-operated candle, which can be found in most craft stores.

This kitty’s paint is all-original and her wire bale handle is original as well. Her paper insert, creating her super-scary expression, is a verywell-done replacement that was created using 70-year-old paper. We will be sending along her original waxed-paper insert as well – however, it is missing a rather large section. Her bottom is intact with no holes.

Felicia’s exact condition is as follows: there are some rubs to her original paint, specifically at her nose and her ear tips, at the bottom of her fence posts, and at the back opening. Please see photos. Quite frankly, Ziz enjoys seeing a few distressed areas to the paint – it speaks to the age of the piece and enhances its "Hallowe'en-y" appeal! At the back opening near the top there is a very short separation to the pulp.

We think this charming example of a classic Made-in-the-USA decoration is in SPOOKtacular condition for her age. If you are a collector who enjoys traditional and iconic Hallowe'en imagery from the mid-twentieth century, then Felicia just may be the kitty cat for you!
