Vintage Hopf Violin and Bow (early 1900's)
This antique violin is a stunning relic of the early 20th century! Being a family heirloom, I am not 100% sure of the instrument's origin or history. However, after asking my grandmother some questions about it, finding a receipt for a repair to the sound board, and by doing some research, I am fairly certain of the following:
- The violin was made in Germany under the Hopf designation sometime between 1900 and 1925- It measures 23" long, 8" wide (at the widest part of the body), and 2" deep.- A crack (along the long axis) of the sound board was repaired in 1977- 2 of the strings are missing *Replacing the 2 missing strings will make the violin fully-functional again- The chin rest may not be original to the violin- The bow may not be original to the violin *Bow has an ebony handle with pearl inserts- The case is original to the violin- Other than a few scuffs and scratches on the sound board, the varnished wood is in good shape and has a rich appearance (see
