This is a Japanese wood sewing box from the early to mid 1900\'s. It\'s made of paulownia (Kiri) a very light weight Asian wood. All the handles / hardware is made of copper. The intricate joinery in this is shown in a closeup in the fourth photo. It\'s 11 inches high (28 cm), 10 1/2 inches wide (27 cm) and 5 1/2 inches deep (14 cm).It weighs just over 3 pounds (1.4 kilo).

One thing unusual about this is that it has handles. This was originally made to not have any front handles. The holes in the back were there to push the drawer out with a finger then giving access to the drawer. Somewhere in it\'s history the owner got tired of reaching around the back and had the copper hardware added on.

In this era awomen would often make the kimonos for the house hold, repair the ones they had as well as futons and anything else that needed repairing material wise. This was a woman\'s tool box. And because they were so necessary and so often used, like many of the everyday but necessary items in Japan, they were made beautifully. These boxes are often used as jewelry boxes or for the storage of small items.
