Right up until the chain saw came along, this ax was The Tool. Kelly Works in Charleston, WV was one of the largest and longest lived ax and tool makers in the US. They made a lot of different axes in a huge range of styles, because it was kind of like buying a certain kind of razor blade brand today, every guy had their preference.
Some ax and handle styles were more suited to different tree cutting and hardness of wood, there were a lot of variables to the process. Suffice to say, Kelly tool designers kept coming up with new designs aimed at making the chopping process more efficient.
One of Kellys higher-end axes was the Red Warrior line, which is what you see here. This ax feels like tool steel and does not have a forging seam. I think they also made a double-bit version in different patterns.
The tool is well marked as can be seen in the pictures. I believe there is also the authentic makers \'touch mark\' under the heel - it looks like a numeral 4, but I need to brush it to clean it and look closer. The cutting edge has no major issues. Pictures illustrate.
The tool accepts a standard ax eye handle, deer foot pattern. I\'m going to say it\'s 3+ lbs, feel right hefty to handle. As a user or for display, this is a very nice specimen of American Ax Toolmaking. I would estimate the age as early to mid-1900\'s, I\'d say 1920\'s most likely. For a tool going on a hundred, it\'s not taking any guff.
