Vintage Lawrence Saufkie Sterling Silver Hopi Overlay Belt Buckle, Bear,55 Grams For Sale
Vintage Lawrence Saufkie Sterling Silver Hopi Overlay Belt Buckle. This belt buckle has an overlay design of a bear, bear paw, and water waves. It is in good vintage condition, with surface scratches and 2 dings in the upper left corner and the lower left corner, all visible in the photos. A professional jeweler could buff out the scratches and dings. It measures 3" x 1 7/8" and will fit a 1 1/2" belt or smaller. It weighs 55.3 grams. It is marked on the back "Saufkie, Sterling" and a bear symbol, which is Saufkie's hallmark. Lawrence Saufkie, a Hopi Native American, was taught to silver smith by his father, Paul Saufkie, who is considered one of the leaders among Hopi craftsmen. He created the Hopi overlay technique in the 1940's that is known today as traditional Hopi style. Lawrence Saufkie (born 1935) started creating his own overlay jewelry in 1947, and had a long, successful career as a Southwestern silversmith. His work is amazing and highly sought after. He passed away last year, so this will be your chance to own one of his vintage pieces. Then you can see what all the fuss is about! It's a work of art.
